Be the Light of Keene

The Keene interfaith clergy association invites you to surround the city in candlelight and love in response to the events in Charlottesville, VA.  On Sunday, August 27 at 7:30pm, we will gather in Central Square for a welcome from Mayor Lane, followed by a prayer.  Then, with each of us holding an unlit candle, we will walk in single file down both sides of Main Street until we make two long lines from Central Square all the way to Winchester Street (or beyond!)  Starting at the square, we’ll pass the flame from one person to the next until all our candles are lit.  We’ll then create the largest choir Keene has ever heard, singing “This Little Light of Mine” together, after which we’ll take a few moments of silence in memory of all those who have died of hate crime.  Finally, in silence, we will extinguish our candles one by one with a word of peace one to another, starting again at the square and on down the line.

The business owners of Main Street are asked to place an electric candle in their windows overnight that night and into the future, as a symbol of our collective desire to be a city of love and light, and to keep the light of hope and community shining.

Come with your friends, neighbors and children to this peaceful event.  And if you can, please bring a candle for yourself and a few extras to share with others who may want to join in.
